A fine that could be around $30 million, an additional one-game suspension for Michigan’s coach and a two-year show-cause order, though I’m not sure how that will affect him as I don’t see Michigan firing him over this.
Moore is expected to sit out the Husker game in 2025, changes in NCAA rules means that he will not be able to participate in practices and other team activities the week of the suspension.
I think this deserves more than a slap on the wrist but unless I don’t know something isn’t $30M a tad extreme? I mean, I have no love lost for Michigan but $30M, and that may not be all of it, wow!
Forgoing post-season revenue is where the numbers start to add up, another run to the NC might be $15 million. But I don’t really expect Michigan to do that in the next few years. AP’s analysis suggests the fine might wind up being under $20 million, but that’s still a chunk of cash.
Michigan’s insouciance and denial of facts probably affected how hard the NCAA came down on them. The Big Ten commissioner wrote the NCAA Enforcement Committee saying the self-imposed penalties were enough, I’m guessing that was under some pressure from Michigan.
A slap on the wrist may be about all the NCAA can still get away with doing without attracting the ire of the courts or Congress. IMHO, there will NEVER be another death penalty issued in a major sport, and certainly not against a Power 4+ school, possibly not any FBS school.
