Signing someone to an extension doesn’t preclude firing them if they don’t deliver, it just (usually) makes it more expensive to do it.

The opening at LSU is producing interesting ripples. The Governor of Louisiana, who basically controls appointing the LSU Board, is saying that there’s no way the AD at LSU is making the decision on hiring a new coach, because not only is he the one who gave Kelly a big extension, he’s also the one who gave Fischer an extension at Texas A&M that meant they had a $75 Million buyout when they fired him after the AD left to take the LSU job.
LSU’s AD resigned today. Not surprising given the Governor’s lambasting.

Rhule has IMHO done well enough to earn the extension, as it is preferable to finding a replacement for him.
The final 4 games of the season will be an interesting benchmark, the Huskers may only be favored in the UCLA game. I saw a note that said the odds on the USC game had changed but ESPN is still showing the Huskers as a 4.5 point underdog. Penn State probably isn’t as bad as the games they have lost but might struggle to get bowl eligibility. They’re 3-4 with games against Ohio State(R), Indiana, Michigan State(R), Nebraska and Rutgers (R). I could see them losing 3 of those.
