ESPN story:
It won’t be long, if it isn’t here already, where the so-called student/athlete won’t have time to go to class. There is at least one good thing about the proposal. That is the doing away with the conference championship games. It has been my opinion that the conference championships should count for or against in the final rankings.

I still prefer the old Bowl system, but a 24-team playoff with no conference championship sounds good.

This is basically what FCS and the other lower levels do. 24 team playoff and no conference championship games.
D2 has expanded to 32 teams and D3 to 40!
At some point, bowl games are gonna have to go away too.
Which old bowl system was that?
The one where the Big Ten sent only one team to a bowl game or the one where Alabama decided what team it wanted to play in a bowl game to enhance its chances at claiming a national championship?
Mike Nolan
That’s already happening, two bowl games folded in the last week.
In D1-FBS, people always talk about how playing in a bowl game helps you get ready for next season, somehow that doesn’t seem to be an issue in the other divisions.
The NCAA Basketball Tournament is at 68 teams (and rumors are it may go to 72), and there are two or three other post-season tournaments, like the one Nebraska won in Las Vegas last spring.
I don’t see the bowl games going completely away, ESPN might have to go back to showing Australian rules football games again.
I like the ties to the bowls. Orange - Big 8
Rose - Big 10 and PAC 10
Sugar-SEC
Cotton-Southwest
No conference championship games
I can’t remember what other tie ins there were.
Rest of the bowls teams selected by the bowls.
Polls determined the National Champion.
We still discuss who really was the best team and deserved the honor.
A 24-team playoff adds some excitement to the playoffs. I think that might be fun.

What if the Fiesta Bowl just shifted to Lincoln or wherever Arkansas plays? Still a bowl game but with home field ties. I think every playoff game should be home field. Call it whatever you like. Miami vs OSU at Columbus on Jan 2 sounds good to me.
I would love that. However, I went to the Iowa game this year. That was too cold to watch a game for my old bones. I’d watch on TV, tho.
